Extended Call for Papers: Translation and Children’s Literature, Films and Animation in North and South Korea Conference

Extended Call for Papers: Translation and Children’s Literature, Films and Animation in North and South Korea Conference (in person)

Friday, April 22, 2022, York University, Toronto

Extended Deadline: Monday, February 28, 2022

Translations of children’s literature, film and animation play a vital role in providing entertainment and education as well as in preparing the young for their roles in society. The importation and assimilation of foreign ideas, genres, styles and techniques have served to promote the aims of governments, interest groups and other organizations. While North and South Korea share cultural traditions, their socio-political systems lead them to import and use foreign materials, as well as to export their own materials, in different ways.

We welcome proposals from scholars including graduate students from a wide range of disciplines whose research deals with translation and children’s literature, film and animation in North and/or South Korea.

This conference will examine, among other topics:

  • The exportation/importation of children’s literature, film and animation and national image building
  • The social and political implications of dubbing vs. subtitles
  • The uses of translated children’s literature in textbooks
  • Grimm realities: Transforming Fairy Tales in North and South Korea
  • Child “Soldiers on the Cultural Front”: Soviet Models vs. Colonial Traditions in North Korean Children’s Literature

Please submit the following to kore@yorku.ca by February 28, 2022:
