Call for Applications | Dissertation Workshop at York University

The Korean Office for Research and Education (KORE) at York University, Toronto, Canada is hosting a Dissertation Workshop on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, 2022. Doctoral students worldwide currently working on their dissertations that focus on modern South Korea, North Korea, or the Korean diaspora­ in the social sciences and humanities are welcome to apply. This workshop will be held online via Zoom due to restrictions related to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The workshop is offered as a part of “Korea in the World, the World in Korean Studies” (KWWK) project, funded by the Core University Programs for Korean Studies of the Academy of Korean Studies. The KWWK is led by the Korean studies faculty at York University in close collaboration with other universities in western Canada.

Areas in focus include modern art and art history, capitalism, gender and sexuality, history and memory, literature, migration and transnationalism, politics and ideology, popular culture, social and labor movement, and urban studies, which reflect the KWWK faculty members’ research areas. Applications outside these topics in the humanities and social sciences are also welcome.

The dissertation workshop provides the opportunity for doctoral students to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their work from mentor faculty and peers. During the workshop, about 10-15 participants will present their work and engage in discussion with one another after being grouped in panels based on topics and themes. The KWWK faculty members will offer feedback on individual dissertation project. Check here for the KWWK faculty at York and beyond.

Eligibility: Applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal at the time of application.

Application:

  • Dissertation proposal summary (double-spaced; 1,200 words maximum)
  • Curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum)
  • Writing sample in English (double-spaced; 9,000 words maximum)
  • Optional: Provide two potential faculty mentors from the KWWK faculty member list.
  • A letter of recommendation from your dissertation supervisor submitted directly to kore@yorku.ca.
